LADY KNIGHTS & ZAIN, RED RIVER CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS!!

Your Lady Knights played in the RRAC/KCAC Conference Championship at Lincoln Park GC in Oklahoma City. The conference tournament was ran by Southwestern College.

A team consisting of Freshmen Fariza Zain, Laura Deleonardis, Daniela Martinez; Junior Carol Galindo and playing in her final conference tournament, Senior Esther Kang ventured to a course they played in the fall to compete against conference foes UT-Brownsville and Texas Wesleyan.

Starting in windy but warm conditions the First round was a struggle for the Lady Knights as loose shots and even looser putts as they fired a poor opening round of 331 to lie 4 shots off the lead set by Texas Wesleyan.

Led by another solid round by the in-form Fariza Zain who fired 74 to lead the field.

Coach Belfield "Highly disappointing first round, we came in here with high expectations to not only win but dominate. Our putting today was as bad as I have ever seen it. We didn't do a good enough job of grinding out a score and as a result Texas Wesleyan are beating us. There is not a doubt in my mind however that we will come through tomorrow".

The second round started in frigid conditions as the temperature had plummeted 40* from the previous day! Wind, sleet and rain didn't help the day get any warmer!

The Lady Knights again started off sluggish and were behind after the front 9 but superb back nines from Laura Deleonardis and Daniela Martinez as well as the round of the day from Senior Esther Kang helped the Lady Knights pull away on the back nine and end up with a comfortable 18 shot win! Fariza Zain won the individual conference title by 2 strokes!

Coach Belfield "We have played in some miserable conditions this semester but this round trumps the lot! It was terrible out there! The front nine was a bit of a disaster, Fariza and Esther turned ok but the other 3 were struggling. Laura and Daniela turned their rounds completely around however firing Even and +2 respectively.
The star of the day though was Esther who fired the lowest round of the day! It was great to see her step up as a senior and make sure this wasn't her last tournament! It was also fantastic to see Fariza pick up her first collegiate win, she has put in work in the right areas of her game it was great to see her take the W.
We have a ton of work to do before Nationals, but we are looking forward to heading up to Nebraska and competing against the elite teams!"

Led by Fariza Zain 1st with 74-79, Esther Kang (5th 84-76), Daniela Martinez & Laura Deleonardis (T12th 86-83 & 87-82) and Carol Galindo (15th 87-84).
