The Knights came in feeling good about their games and their chances of knocking off No.1 Texas Wesleyan and No.7 Our Lady of the Lake University and winning an automatic bid to Nationals!
The Knights started of in glorious conditions, in the lead group and posted a 299 to lie in 4th place. Led by Carter Caldwell's 71, he was backed up by 72 from Joss Gosling and 76 from Daniel Stoakes.
Coach Belfield "The first round was a bit of a roller coaster!! Carter played much better, it was great to see him get back on track after having a bit of a rough semester. Joss played poorly on the front nine before storming back in 33 to shoot a good score. We have to post a better score in the 2nd round to do some catching up....."
The Second round invited some low scores to be shot, and your Knights produced their best when it mattered firing an Even Par 288!
Led by Joss Gosling's 2 under par 70, Derek Trofimczuk fired 71 and Carter Caldwell (73) & Travis Kemp (74) chipped in with 2 solid scores.
The Knights gained 5 strokes in the leaders to finish in T3rd and 7 shots back going into the final round!
Coach Belfield "Where has this been all spring! Much better, I was really pleased to see Joss (finally!) break through the par barrier, he has been focusing on the right areas and I am really pleased to see it pay off a little! Derek actually played better than his score suggests in the first round but scored much better in this round to really help the team! We look forward to playing some good golf tomorrow!"
The 3rd and Final round again started in idyllic conditions and the Knights started with a fire in their bellies!
The Knights lacked a 4th score however and even though Joss Gosling's 69 meant he won the tournament, the Knights were only able to shoot 293 and finish 4th.
Coach Belfield "This is very bittersweet. Joss played superbly the last couple of rounds, he was 8 under for his last 45 holes. He is a very worthy Champion!
Carter played really solid golf, he didn't score as well as he would like but it was really good to see him post 3 good scores. We really lacked a consistent 4th & 5th score, if we had something from them we would have won by a mile! Unfortunately it means we are now on the outside looking in, we have a nervous wait to see if we get an At-Large bid"
