Knights named All Academic Team!!

GCAA Announces 2013 Team Academic Awards
presented by Farmers Insurance

NORMAN, Okla. – Brown (Division I), Post (Division II), Greensboro College (Division III), Embry Riddle - AZ (NAIA), Scottsdale CC (NJCAA DI) and South Mountain CC (NJCAA DII) have been named Academic National Champions for their respective divisions announced the GCAA.

Brown posted the highest overall team GPA for all divisions with a 3.74. A total of 143 teams submitted GPAs of 3.00 or higher to earn All-Academic Team recognition - a new high in the five years of the award.

“All the credit goes to the players - I couldn’t be happier for them,” said Brown Head Coach Michael Hughes. “We put a high emphasis on academics and I know that we’ve been close to winning this award the past four years. To carry an Ivy League curriculum and course load while competing is tough. This lends credibility that if you recruit good quality kids your program will be rewarded.”

South Mountain CC won its fourth straight Academic National Championships in NJCAA DII.  Post earned the Division II Academic National Championship for the second-straight year while Brown, Greensboro College, Embry Riddle - AZ and Scottsdale CC won for the first time.

DePaul, Harvard, Kennesaw State, Madonna, Ohio Valley, Redlands, Richmond, SCAD Atlanta, SCAD Savannah, Stanford, Sterling, Stevens Institute of Technology, Utah Valley State, Valparaiso, William & Mary and Yale also received President’s Special Recognition status for having team GPAs of 3.5 or better.

“Farmers Insurance is proud to honor and support the GCAA and their 2013 recipients of the 2013 Team Academic Awards,” said Chuck Browning, Head of Sponsorship and Corporate Giving for Farmers Insurance. “A key philanthropic pillar of Farmers Insurance is Education, thus this award is a perfect fit for us and gives us a chance to extend our support of golf throughout the year. It is also an extension of our University Day platform at the Farmers Insurance Open, which we continue to see great success on each year.”

Lee’s (Tenn.) women’s golf squad, who finished the academic year with a NAIA-best combined 3.93 grade-point average, was selected as the Scholar-Team of the Year.

Rounding out the top five award winners are: Valley City State (N.D.) women’s golf (3.90), Tabor (Kan.) women’s cross country (3.81) and women’s tennis (3.81), and Doane (Neb.) women’s cross country (3.77).

Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) led all schools with 19 programs honored, while Hastings (Neb.), St. Ambrose (Iowa) and Taylor (Ind.) were second with 18 teams each. For the second year in a row, more than 15 percent of the schools receiving the award had a 3.5 or higher grade-point average.

WHAT A LIST! And what an achievement by these players!

Did it end like we would have wanted? No, we didn't win the National Championship which is the ultimate aim for this program.
However after dwelling on it I truly am very proud of what we have achieved this year.

We had 48 chances to win (11 team, 11 ind x 2), We won 10 times (5 team, 5 ind).
I like that percentage of winning!

My players also won OFF the course with both teams having GPA's over 3.0 including the guys who in the Spring had a 3.45 team GPA.

I want to wish Laura, Joss & Derek well on their new adventures. They will be leaving us for pastures anew. In particular Derek & Joss who were part of my first recruiting class.
You have both worked extremely hard to get where you are, its been fun to see what happened when equal parts talent & work ethic combine.
We all wish all 3 of you well for the future.
Thank you for help making history at Northwood.

I want to personally thank our Seniors, Travis, Ian and Esther.
They have stood by me for 3 years and worked their backsides off.

Travis graduated Valedictorian with a cumulative GPA of 3.95.
Esther graduated an All American after fighting her way back from a career threatening injury.
Ian who pushed harder than anyone to keep his roster spot and find a way to get through college.
Its been a pleasure to get to know you, I believe you are the best prepared Seniors to ever come out of this program.

I can be very tough sometimes, I have very high standards and I hold my players to them.
This year we achieved stuff that Northwood has never been able to do before.
I don't say this often enough to my players......I am so proud of you.
Each and every one of you has contributed to our success.

I hope all of you reading this have a great summer!

Til next year!
Coach
