NAIA Women’s Golf Coaches’ Postseason Top 25

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the first time this season, Oklahoma City sits atop the 2013 NAIA Women’s Golf Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Friday. The Stars received all 15 first-place votes for 405 points to earn the No. 1 ranking.
Oklahoma City claimed its sixth all-time national championship, first since 2009, with a 12-stroke victory over British Columbia, last week at Wilderness Ridge Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb. The Stars shot rounds of 310-305-305-304 – 1,224 (+72) for the championship. Oklahoma City was led by individual medalist, Jessica Schiele, who tied the lowest 18 hole score for a national championship in the second round by shooting a 68. Schiele scored rounds of 75-68-74-78 – 295 (+7) for a five shot victory over teammate Elia Folch.
National runner-up, British Columbia comes in at No. 2 with 392 points. The Thunderbirds were led by Haley Cameron’s 306 (76-76-74-80), which tied her for fourth place, at the championship.
Embry-Riddle (Fla.) jumps four spots to No. 3 with 379 points. The Eagles shot the best rounds of the national championship in the first and fourth rounds by shooting a team score of 301 each day. Embry-Riddle finished third in the national championship.
Cal State San Marcos improved two spots to No. 4 this week, while notching 363 points. The Cougars finished fourth at the national championship with a team score of 1,245 (310-305-318-312). Rounding out the top five is No. 5 Lubbock Christian (Texas) with 353 points. Lubbock Christian finished in fifth place at the national championship.
Bellevue (Neb.) made the biggest move this week, as they improved six spots, from No. 17 to No. 11. The Bruins finished 11th after shooting rounds of 319-319-321-314 – 1,273. Bellevue was led by Maria Saavedra, who tied for fourth, with a 306 (79-78-77-72).
Joining the Top 25 this week is No. 23 SCAD Atlanta (Ga.), No. 24 Madonna (Mich.), and No. 25 Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.), all who competed in the national championship last week but all missed the cut. SCAD Atlanta recorded rounds of 332-346-336 finishing 22nd.
Madonna finished 20th after shooting rounds of 325-340-341. Dakota Wesleyan finished in 23rd place with rounds of 337-346-348.
On the other end of the spectrum, Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) (No. 16) and Rocky Mountain (Mont.) (No. 25) fell from the rankings.
The Sooner Athletic Conference leads all conferences with five teams in the Top 25, while The Sun Conference is right behind with four teams. Association of Independent Institutions and Mid-South Conference follow with three teams each.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences/independents/unaffiliated groups.
Notes: (All information dates back to 2000 season) Ten different programs have been ranked No. 1 all-time ... Oklahoma City owns the most No. 1-rankings with 41, followed by British Columbia with 13 ... No other programs have been listed first more than three times ... The Stars were listed at No. 1 for all of 2008, 2007, 2004, and 2003 and the Thunderbirds topped the list for all of 2001 …This is the fourth time SCAD Savannah has been ranked No. 1…William Penn (Iowa) and Oklahoma Baptist return to the poll for the first time since the first-regular season edition.
