Knights have 18th place finish in loaded DII event

Your Northwood Knights placed 18th in the Dallas Baptist hosted Patriot Invitational at the Golf Club of Dallas.
The Patriot invitational is one of the premiere DII events of the year and this year was no exception as there were two Top 10 schools, Abilene Christian & Central Oklahoma as well as 5 other schools ranked inside the Top 40 from all over the country. Included in the field were Top ranked NAIA team Oklahoma Christian and No.3 & No.16 ranked Texas Wesleyan and Lubbock Christian.

The Knights came in with confidence after their win at Oklahoma Baptist the week before and were feeling strong. The play in the first round mostly reflected that as the Knights posted a 294 to lay 15 shots out of 2nd. The Knights however fell back in the 2nd round with a poor 300 that left them well off the pace set by Texas Wesleyan.

Coach Belfield "The guys played much better than the 294 score suggests in the first round, we just let a few shots get away from us in the first round and we were unable to finish. The second round was poor and we fully deserved to be back of the pack after that round. It was highly disappointing considering the strength of the field and how a good result would push us back up the rankings. Our attitudes were not there and our short games really needed to be sharp and they weren't".

The third round brought gusty winds from the north which made the golf course play much different. The scores reflected the conditions as they rose for all teams but the Knights just couldn't find a way to scramble when they most needed to.
The Knights finished in 18th place with scores of 294-300-304.

They were led by a very solid performance by Freshman Derek Trofimczuk who posted 73-71-72 finishing T31st. Freshman Daniel Stoakes posted 71-76-76 for a T61, Freshman Chris Craft shot 78-74-79 for 86th place and Joss Gosling & Jeremy Novakowski shot 75-79-78 each for T87.

Senior Adam Gelmon played as an individual and posted 77-76-82 good for 93rd place.

The Knights will try and compete for a national bid next week at the RRAC Championship which is being hosted by Our Lady of The Lake University at TeraVista GC in Round Rock, Texas.
