Lady Knights take 3rd at RRAC Championship!

The Lady Knights played the Red River conference championship at Lincoln Park GC in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on April 23/24th.

The Ladies came into the tournament knowing that only a win would be enough to take them to the National Championship which is hosted in Tennessee.

Coach Belfield "We have battled through this spring against injury and poor play, the girls have fought so hard to have some kind of a chance going into conference but for the first time in a long time we are not the favorite coming into this tournament".

The Lady Knights started off in perfect conditions in Oklahoma and the play was almost as good!
The Ladies shot 336 in the first round to lay 14 shots off the pace set by Southwestern College (KS).
Led by Sophomore Carol Galindo (81), Freshman Nicola Jeffries shot a season best 84, Kirstie Krueger & Bailey Bearden shot 85 & 86.

Coach Belfield "I said to the ladies before the round that we had nothing to lose as no one was expecting us to compete considering the way we have played all spring, so to give a few teams something to worry about was very nice going into the second round! I was really impressed with the girls, especially Nicola who finally showed us how she can play by knocking off 9 shots from her previous season low. I think that if we can take away a couple of loose shots, we might have a shot tomorrow........"

The Lady Knights, playing in the last group, showed their mettle in the final round as they posted a tournament best 327. Led by Freshman Kirstie Krueger with a superb 79 the Lady Knights posted a score that other teams would need to play well to beat. Unfortunately for the Knights UT Brownsville and Southwestern College were up to the task as they both played well enough to pip the Knights, with Southwestern College taking the title by a mere one shot.

Coach Belfield "The ladies cut out a lot of loose shots today and played the golf I know they are capable of! Kirstie is a very talented young lady who has had a lot of up & downs this year; however she has learned a lot and hopefully will use this as a springboard to keep on developing as a person & as a golfer. When she really starts doing more to get herself prepared on and off the golf course, 79 will seem like a bad score........! Carol had her best tournament of the year, as did Nicola who showed how good of a player she can be. Both girls have put in the hard work this spring and this tournament should be a great boost going into the summer tournament season!"

Knights grab 3rd at RRAC Championship

The Red River Conference championship took place April 16th & 17th at TeraVista Golf course in Round Rock, Texas.

Consisting of 6 teams including 3rd ranked Texas Wesleyan and 14th ranked Our Lady of the Lake University, the Knights knew that they had thier work cut out in order to compete at the National Championship.

"The players came in rested and playing well, we have been improving every tournament regardless of whether the scores have reflected it or not. This tournament however is the big one and we need to do what we haven't done all spring and that is PLAY WELL!!"

The Knights played solid golf in the first round shooting 293 to lay in 3rd place behind leaders OLLU and UT-Brownsville (290) and one shot ahead of Texas Wesleyan.
The second round again brought solid, if unspectacular, golf with the Knights shooting 294.
Leading the team was Junior Travis Kemp (72-71), Joss Gosling added a 71 to his first round 75, Derek Trofimczuk opened with a one under par 71 and added a 77 to his opening round score. Rounding out the Knights were Jt Zaiger (75-75) and Daniel Stoakes (78-83).

The Knights were 11 shots behind the leaders, Texas Wesleyan, going into the 3rd round and needed a great score to overcome them and OLLU.
The Knights could never quite get going as they came in with a second successive 294 to lie 13 shots behind winners Texas Wesleyan.

In the final round Derek Trofimczuk again played solid firing 71, Joss Gosling 72, JT Zaiger 75 and Travis Kemp and Daniel Stoakes shot 76.

Coach Belfield "The guys were much closer than anyone expected us to be after our spring season. They played mostly solid golf but in the second and final round just couldn't overcome a few loose shots. I was really pleased with the guys play because we haven't played anywhere near that level all spring. It was great for this young squad to be in contention and hopefully this will provide them a big boost going into next year!"

Knights have 18th place finish in loaded DII event

Your Northwood Knights placed 18th in the Dallas Baptist hosted Patriot Invitational at the Golf Club of Dallas.
The Patriot invitational is one of the premiere DII events of the year and this year was no exception as there were two Top 10 schools, Abilene Christian & Central Oklahoma as well as 5 other schools ranked inside the Top 40 from all over the country. Included in the field were Top ranked NAIA team Oklahoma Christian and No.3 & No.16 ranked Texas Wesleyan and Lubbock Christian.

The Knights came in with confidence after their win at Oklahoma Baptist the week before and were feeling strong. The play in the first round mostly reflected that as the Knights posted a 294 to lay 15 shots out of 2nd. The Knights however fell back in the 2nd round with a poor 300 that left them well off the pace set by Texas Wesleyan.

Coach Belfield "The guys played much better than the 294 score suggests in the first round, we just let a few shots get away from us in the first round and we were unable to finish. The second round was poor and we fully deserved to be back of the pack after that round. It was highly disappointing considering the strength of the field and how a good result would push us back up the rankings. Our attitudes were not there and our short games really needed to be sharp and they weren't".

The third round brought gusty winds from the north which made the golf course play much different. The scores reflected the conditions as they rose for all teams but the Knights just couldn't find a way to scramble when they most needed to.
The Knights finished in 18th place with scores of 294-300-304.

They were led by a very solid performance by Freshman Derek Trofimczuk who posted 73-71-72 finishing T31st. Freshman Daniel Stoakes posted 71-76-76 for a T61, Freshman Chris Craft shot 78-74-79 for 86th place and Joss Gosling & Jeremy Novakowski shot 75-79-78 each for T87.

Senior Adam Gelmon played as an individual and posted 77-76-82 good for 93rd place.

The Knights will try and compete for a national bid next week at the RRAC Championship which is being hosted by Our Lady of The Lake University at TeraVista GC in Round Rock, Texas.

Knights take win in Oklahoma!

The Northwood Knights picked up the first win of the season at the OBU Invitational hosted at Shawnee CC.
The Knights were washed out in the second round whilst trying to extend their lead as a massive storm rolled through the Oklahoma plains.

The Knights were led by solid scores from Freshmen Joss Gosling (75 - T5), Derek Trofimczuk and Daniel Stoakes (78 - T10) and Sophomore Jeremy Novakowski (79 - T15). The win was made all the sweeter as our fifth player, Chris Craft, had to withdraw due to illness!!

The Knights continue their season at the DBU Patriot Invitational in Dallas, Texas.
